The piece "Guardian Cats on the Move" was commissioned by Boone County Youth Orchestra specifically for the "Celebrate! Boone County" concert on May 11, 2019. Published composer and Boone County resident Kathleen Swayze says, "The piece tells a story about the cats (named Boone and Panda) who live in the dome of the Lebanon Courthouse and who chase away the pigeons that try to roost there. The maintenance workers at the courthouse feed and care for the cats. The opening of the piece is a march-like salute to the majestic courthouse and the cats (listen for the "meow" sounds in the strings). The next section is for Boone and Panda on patrol. And then, we meet the evil pigeons (listen for the bird sounds in the flutes). The cats become aware of the pigeons and start to sneak up. Then they POUNCE! What follows is the battle between the cats and the pigeons. Of course, the cats are victorious! They have been on the job for several years. Props to my cat, Trixie, for being my model for cat behavior, though she can't even win a staring contest with a chipmunk (the pigeons would eat her alive)!"
